General Burning Rules 

Open Burning: Expires 30 days from issue date or upon declaration of Fire Season which ever comes first.

What to Burn:
Yard debris only may be burned in an open burn and all must be dry.

What Not to Burn:
Wet garbage, plastic, wire, insulation, automobile parts, asphalt, petroleum treated material, rubber products, animal remains, animal or vegetable matter resulting from the handling, preparation, cooking or servicing of food and any other material which normally emits dense smoke or noxious odors.

 

Burning Barrels:  Expires upon declaration of Fire Season

Wet garbage, plastic, wire, insulation, automobile parts, asphalt, petroleum treated material, rubber products, animal remains, animal or vegetable matter resulting from the handling, preparation, cooking or servicing of food and any other material which normally emits dense smoke or noxious odors 

Residential Open Burning Minimum Requirements For Your Safety And Protection 

Residential burns within the boundaries of the Charleston Rural Fire Protection District do not need a permit unless it is during fire season. All land clearing, home remodeling or any commercial establishment must obtain a permit from the local department of environmental quality. Permits must then be obtained from the fire district business office at 92342 Cape Arago Highway. Burning Permits: Burning permits are required for all debris burning and can be requested at www.charlestonfire.net, by calling 541-888-3268 or at the office at Fire Station 1 at 92342 Cape Arago Hwy. All permits require a site inspection by Fire District staff before a permit can be issued. Open burning permits are valid for two weeks. Extensions can be requested by calling the station at 541-888-3268 or by stopping by the station.

Location of Fire:

Not less than 50 feet from any structure with adequate provisions made to prevent fire from spreading to within 50 feet of any structure. The distance that you may burn may be reduced to 25 feet if the pile is a maximum of 3 foot in width and 2 foot in height. Burning must be on your own property unless permission of the owner is granted.

Times to Burn:

Outside of Fire Season: Burning will be done only during daylight hours. A responsible adult will attend fires, with a garden hose at all times until completely out. Burning should not be done when windy. During Fire Season: Burning during Fire Season is strictly prohibited.

Residential Burn Barrel Minimum Requirements For Your Safety And Protection Burning Permit 

Burning permits are required for all burn barrels and can be requested at www.charlestonfire.net, by calling 541-888-3268 or at the office at Fire Station 1 at 92342 Cape Arago Hwy. All permits require a site inspection by Fire District staff before a permit can be issued. Burn barrel permits are valid until Fire Season is declared each year.

Location of Barrel:

Barrel shall have a radius of at least 15 feet around the barrel that is free of dry grass, weeds or other combustibles. Barrel shall not be placed under trees or power lines. Burning must be on your own property unless permission of the owner is granted.

Specifications:

Barrel shall be made of metal topped with a heavy mesh screen with holes not larger than ¼ inch. Barrel should be in good condition with a draft arrangement and grates to aid in a more efficient burn. Other types of incinerators are allowed as long as they meet specifications. The use of burn barrels in Mobile Home/ RV parks and also for commercial incineration is prohibited by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.
